Engagement: Wenzel and Gaines

By Joyce Ervin

It all began at Milan High School. Kelsey Wenzel and Sam Gaines were crowned Homecoming King and Queen in 2015.
As students, Wenzel swam for Milan for ten years swimming on state teams and was captain of the team her senior year. Gaines was enrolled in the school’s ECA program and holds a Fourth-degree Black Belt awarded by Milan’s Tae Kwon Do Master Christopher Dykes
After graduation, the couple found themselves ten-hours apart as they both attended different post-secondary schools. The distance didn’t hamper the relationship. Wenzel was at Concordia University and Gaines studied at Michigan Technological University in the upper peninsula. He is now employed by Power Engineer in Ann Arbor as a civil engineer. Wenzel graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree and is a registered nurse.
A bit more romance came when Gaines got down on one knee and presented the engagement ring and said, “Kelsey Lee will you marry me?” Wenzel said he proposed on their sixth-anniversary of being together as high school sweethearts while they were at the University of Michigan Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor.
There is another interesting twist to this story. Wenzel said the couple discussed who would marry them. Since the couple didn’t want a stranger, it was decided that Milan High School Swim Coach Daniel Heikka will officiate at the 2020 September 5 wedding. Wenzel said, “He was like a second father to me.”
Wenzel is the daughter of Shannon Jenkins and Barry Wenzel. Gaines is the son of Barbara and John Gaines. The bridal party will be made up of family, college and, of course, high school friends.
